Jesus heals the man born blind

by Mike Vandermause on June 03, 2019

In the miracle of Jesus healing a man born blind (John 9: 1-41), the condition of blindness can be viewed as a spiritual metaphor for people not seeing the truth.

Some don’t see Jesus as the savior of the world. It’s as if there are scales on their eyes and they are blinded.

Christ followers can also be partially blinded by things like bitterness and pride, which they need to give over to Jesus.

Pastor Troy Murphy’s message on Sunday, June 2, examined this miracle and how it applies to our lives. Here are some key points:

*Adversity and pain are there to glorify God. In explaining why the man was born blind, Jesus said it wasn’t because of anyone’s sin. Instead he explained (John 9:3): “This happened so that the works of God might be displayed.” Christ followers are not immune to adversity, which can provide an opportunity to give glory to God.

*Adversity and pain are part of growth. There are no short cuts. You must sometimes walk through the valley and be in the storms. God can allow us to be in spaces that aren’t comfortable. Instead of running from that difficult space, we should work through it and learn and grow from the experience. The cocoon stage of a butterfly’s life cycle takes time, just like our growth through difficulties doesn’t happen overnight.

*Only Jesus can heal your blindness. Jesus is the only way to restoration with God. Psalm 146:8 says: The Lord gives sight to the blind. Isaiah 42:16 says: I will lead the blind by ways they have not known.

*In John 9:25 the blind man can’t explain why he could suddenly see but knows that it was Jesus who performed the miracle. He simply says: I was blind but now I see. He didn’t have his theology figured out.  Instead, he testified to what Jesus did in his life. The application is this: You don't need to know all the answers to share Christ. Just tell people how he changed your life and trust that God will use your words to help others believe in him too.

*Are you aware of blindness in your life? Where aren’t you seeing Jesus, who is the only cure for our blindness.
