Day 12: Developing your friendship with God

David’s Psalms were his ways of describing his friendship with God. Some of his words were longing, thirsting, hungering. What words would I use?

Delightful.

Comforting.

Quiet.

Beautiful.

Confusing.

Complicated.

Unpredictable.

Wonder.

Intimate.

Uncompromising.

Surprising.

Beyond.

Never-ending.

I love hanging out with my youngest daughter Allie right now. I guess they were right when they said that you would baby your baby. I tend to buy her what she wants and give her permission to do things the other girls may not have gotten the chance to do just because I am feeling the sense that this is it.

I am about to let go of the last of four girls in our house and I am realizing I love being with her no matter what I am doing. As a matter of fact, I had a meeting downtown and asked her if she wanted to come with me and sit at a table next to us and do her homework while I met. I couldn’t help but turn around several times to check on her and every time I saw her I couldn’t help but smile. I love having her around even if we aren’t talking.

When we do talk, it is always connecting around her life, my life, what I care about, how work is going, what is bothering her, what advice can I give her, funny stories about school, friends, class – whatever! I don’t care what the topic is, it just connects us and I love it. That is intimate friendship. We don’t have to talk, but when we do, it creates an even deeper bond.

I want that with Jesus. I want that kind of friendship with Jesus. I choose that friendship. I want him to KNOW me because I am telling him about me and my desires, hopes, fears, dreams, frustrations, requests. I want to sit still and not talk and make the connection because I am just being with him.

Rick Warren said, “The truth is – you are as close to God as you choose to be.”

Today, I choose to be. And tomorrow, I will have to choose again.
