___________ vs Effective

Monday Musings - “__________ vs effective”

It’s Monday, September 29, 2014

Last Thursday, our staff did an interesting exercise.  We identified necessary values of a healthy team and then talked about the enemies of a unified team.  We were honest about our own shortcomings as a team and how we need to be better in the areas of communication and shared purpose.  It was liberating to be so honest.  No one had to get defensive about how they really are communicating well and everyone else just isn't hearing it right.  No one was finger pointing declaring that “You are the reason for this lack of communication!”  It was simply an honest look at what is working and what is not.  I hope that we can learn and grow form that to create healthy change.  Change that will make GBCC the greatest place to work in Green Bay as well as the country.  I believe it can happen.

One of the things we did was identify what will get in the way of effectiveness.  We have a choice every day to choose effectiveness.  We don’t always make that choice.  Sometimes popular, easy, safe options trump effectiveness.  not just in busy work, but in relationships too.  So we created a list of things that may creep into the space of effectiveness.  Here are a few items from the list, although not exhaustive:

popular

safe

easy

cheap

avoidance

fear

lazy

“not my job”

“I’m the only one that can do this”

sacred cow (always been done like this)

This list can be ever evolving and the question can be asked in any season or environment in life.

Personally, I don’t always choose effective.  At work it's easy for me to believe the lie that I need to be the one that does music every Sunday instead of developing leaders to share the responsibilities, creating effectiveness.

At home it is so easy for me to choose my own needs and wants over my wife, which creates an unsafe, unstable and selfish environment, all because I chose to protect myself instead of being vulnerable.

Every situation of every day has this opportunity.  I am asking myself today: “How will I choose effectiveness today?” You have that same dilemma in front of you. Even if you don’t realize it, you do. How will you choose?

Verse of the day:

Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

John 3:20-21 NIV

What I’m listening to:

“My beloved” - Crowder

Music theory Nugget:

Yesterday, we  did the song “Multiplied’ by NeedToBreathe.  I love this song and I’m so glad that we did it. I also love this song for another reason. It was challenging. Singing while playing the repeated picking riff was quite the mental exercise.  But I loved it.  It reminded me that I need to be challenged musically so that I can continually be getting better.  I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the way I played the song. I could have done better. I could have spent more time preparing so that my confidence in my playing could have been higher. Either way, it was motivating. How are you bettering yourself? How are you sharpening your skills?  Challenge yourself.  We all will benefit from it.

If you are still reading this, thanks for hanging on to my musings. More to come next week.
