Investing in Holy Spirit

by Mike Vandermause on March 09, 2020

How are you investing in your relationship with the Holy Spirit? Troy Murphy asked that question during his message on Sunday, March 8 at Community Church.

Here are key points from Troy’s message:

*Rules do not change hearts. Your life will not be transformed simply by following a set of do's and don'ts. Instead, you should be drawn into a relationship with Christ, who is capable of changing you.

*You are called to trust in the Holy Spirit no matter the outcome.

*The Holy Spirit wants to walk beside you. Are you reaching for the Spirit’s hand on a daily basis? You should enter each day with the mindset that you need the Holy Spirit in your life.

*How do you walk with the Holy Spirit? Here are four specific ways:

1-Renew your mind

Read the Bible and pray regularly. The Spirit will teach you. You will receive Godly wisdom -- spiritual wisdom is different than worldly wisdom. The Spirit will change the way you think. The Bible is the word of God (2 Timothy 3.14-17) and we are called to meditate on His word (Psalm 1). Also bring everything in prayer to God.

2-Set boundaries

We need to set boundaries. It’s a form of self-discipline (2 Timothy 1.7) and helps us deal with our weaknesses (Proverbs 25.28). Make yourself accountable by telling someone else about the boundaries you have set.

3-Use your gift

The body of Christ — the church -- is more than just services or programs. It’s members taking their God-given gifts and using them to glorify God and minister to fellow believers. Are you using your gift? (2 Corinthians 12.7).

4-Seek peacemaking

When you're treated unfairly the first response is usually to seek justice or payback. If you hold onto bitterness, it’s like ingesting poison, which will eat away at you. Seek restoration rather than hanging on to offenses or perceived wrongs committed against you. Love all people, even those who persecute you (Romans 12. 14-19).
