Momentum

by Bobby Coverston on October 20, 2014

It’s Monday, October 20, 2014.

Have you ever had that feeling that something is about to happen. It may be something fearful or something grand. Either way you are taxiing, awaiting take off.

I have been feeling like that as of late. Both personally as well as at church, I feel like something is brewing. I am assuming that it’s good (I hope that it's good). I will leave the land of vague and try to hone in on what I’m feeling.

I have been more challenged in my leadership and responsibility as of late. I have been growing more, learning more, risking more, and tackling more than I think I ever have in any other season of my life as a leader. Even identifying myself as a leader is growth. I used to balk at the label because of all the implied responsibility. Leaders know what they are doing. Leaders are in control. Leaders are smart. Leaders are aggressive. Leaders are relentless. None of these I thought were true of me… because they aren’t. And that’s not leadership either. I have been on a journey of becoming unstuck. Unstuck in my marriage, unstuck in my job and unstuck in life. I’m not suggesting that I have accomplished this to its fullest but rather, I am moving, which in and of itself, is the opposite of stuck. In order to move you need momentum. Even a little can go a long way.

I went to a conference in Nashville TN last month. I learned endless principles, tips, tricks and leadership nuggets to fill a year’s worth of blogging. But one little formula stuck out to me and I have thought about it often at home and at work.

The momentum theorem.

fi/t (G) = M

Isn’t that beautiful? If you know me you know that I cringe at formulas but I love this one.
Focused intensity(fi) over time (/t) multiplied by God ((G)) equals momentum.

Life matters. People matter. My marriage matters. My work matters. Am I going to remain stuck and be a spectator of these institutions that God has placed in front of me or am I going to get unstuck by taking a step into the reality? Even if I don’t know what I am doing, even if I am not the smartest or the most talented or the most qualified, I want to take a step. And then another… and then another.

My focused intensity is not so much about any one of these things as much as it is focused intensity to not get stuck. All of these things benefit from the momentum that is created when I focus my intensity on movement.

I guess I am writing this to share with all who may read this a little insight into my soul and how God is shaping me. But also I hope that it is an encouragement to take a step to get unstuck. Read a good non-fiction book that will challenge your thinking. Get to the gym. Get to church. Say I’m sorry. Start that business. Get help.

Just don’t stay where you are. A powerful quote from this year's GLS was this: "Jesus sees you how/where you are, accepts you where you are, loves you where you are, forgives you where you are, saves you where you are, but he won’t leave you where you are.”

Let's build some momentum and see what happens!

If you are still reading this, thanks for hanging on to my musings.

Verse of the day
"Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” Psalm 51:12
What I’m listening to: Haven’t bought the album but I was listening to the samples on iTunes of You+Me (Pink’s new folk project. I like what I hear so far).

Musical Nugget

What's your favorite song? Why? Take a deeper dive into why this song means so much to you. Is it the lyrics? For many it is. There are several songs that the melody or the chord progression alone evokes emotion in me regardless of lyrics. What is it about the song itself melodically as well as lyrically that transports you somewhere? Identify that, and you may have your foundation for songwriting.
