Day 28: Speaking up for the poor

Posted on

Our opportunity

Beginning in 2013 GBCC has held two Compassion Sundays, which draws attention to the needs of the poorest children around the globe. Two years ago there were 240 families from our church that stepped forward to become child sponsors on a monthly basis. In 2014 volunteers from GBCC wrote 1,000 hand-written letters to kids living in Haiti.

Our direction

Proverbs 31: 8-9 — Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Our value

This annual event is conducted with churches around the world, and the mission is to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name. The program includes 6,500 church partners, has 1.4 million sponsored children and has seen more than 120,000 kids and parents give their life to Christ over the last year. We have asked Compassion International to locate children in Haiti for Community Church attenders to sponsor, with the hope to some day visit them in their homeland. The Ripple Initiative will give us more opportunities to minister to the needy, both in our community and in other parts of the world.

Our prayer

Lord, extend your mercy to every child that suffers in poverty’s grip. Open our eyes to the needs of the poor around the world, and show us how we can make a difference, one child at a time. Inspire more people here to sponsor children through Compassion International. Give us a heart to stand up for those without a voice who are unable to help themselves.
