Bobby Coverston said in his message on Sunday that with Jesus, we don’t have to be fearful. It’s the darkness that needs to be afraid.

The only thing you need to defeat the evil one is Jesus. He is the one who gives us armor as a gift. He is the living Word of God that is breathing and active.

That was Bobby Coverston’s summary on Sunday of our summer sermon series “Fight Club,” in which we are examining the armor of God.

Bobby said if our approach to the armor of God is riddled with fear, then it’s a lie. It’s not about fear, it’s about confidence and hope. We are not the ones that should be afraid.

Jesus is the one that causes the darkness to fear and he invites us into the victory he has already claimed. With Jesus, we don’t have to be fearful. It’s the darkness that needs to be afraid.

Here are more key points from Bobby’s message:

*What the brain is to the body, the mind is to the soul. The mind is where we will form our convictions and attitudes. When the mind has been lied to and deceived, the soul will follow.

*How will Satan attack our mind? By using  pride, doubt, insecurity, hopelessness, jealousy and a victim mentality.

*The helmet of salvation offers us assurance of salvation. The helmet is not the thing that saves us; it gives us assurance. When you put a helmet on, your confidence goes up. Verses throughout scripture remind us over and over that our salvation is assured through Jesus — it is a promise from God.

*How do we lean into this hope we profess in Jesus? By using the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. When Jesus was in the wilderness he was tempted by Satan but used scripture to refute the temptation. Jesus modeled that for us as a reminder of the things that are true.

*Scripture is a two-edged sword. As God’s word is revealed it cuts to our core. It is not meant to cut others down. It is meant to attack the wayward thoughts and attitudes of our own mind.
